The outlook is not optimistic for Anthem Inc.’s $48 billion merger with Cigna Corp.  It has been reported that U.S. antitrust regulators remain skeptical that further consolidation of the payor market will lead to decreased competition. Wall Street Journal, June 19, 2016.

If the merger fails to be approved by regulators, Anthem will be forced to pay Cigna $1.85 billion. Analysts have also suggested Cigna will move forward with acquiring a smaller managed healthcare company. The Street, June 17, 2016.

No matter the outcome of the regulators’ decision, the payor market is sure to see potential major changes on the horizon.
